The Illustris Simulation - most ambitious computer simulation of our universe yet

No matter what your thoughts and opinions might be on the nature of our universe and Big Bang cosmology here is an interesting video, or better yet, a simulation of what astronomers call the first realistic virtual universe. The super-computer simulation, called “Illustris” can recreate 13 billion years of cosmic evolution in a cube 350 million light-years on a side with unprecedented resolution.”Until now, no single simulation was able to reproduce the universe on both large and small scales simultaneously,” says lead author Mark Vogelsberger (MIT/Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics), who conducted the work in collaboration with researchers at several institutions, including the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies in Germany.Previous attempts …

Year's first tropical low headed for southwestern Mexico

A tropical low pressure area formed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean today, about 8 days before the official Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins. Formation of a significant tropical cyclone is possible within the next 12 to 24 hours.Dynamic models show a general northeastward track with slow development as the system tracks toward the Mexican coast.Tropical cyclone formation alert – graphic – May 7, 2014. Image credit: ATFC / JTWCNASA’s Aqua satellite passed over developing tropical low pressure system 90E on May 7 at 08:41 UTC and infrared data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard, showed that some of the thunderstorms had high, cold cloud top temperatures as cold as -52C/-63F, indicating there was some strong uplift in the system.Image credit: NASA / JPL, Ed…

Safety fears as people drawn to Afghan mudslide site

Government officials and aid workers are worried about the safety of people drawn to the site of a catastrophic mudslide in northeastern Afghanistan in search of aid handouts; they warn of the risk of further landslides and flooding. Many of those in tents around the immediate site of the disaster have received basic aid, but the distributions are now attracting villagers from the surrounding area, according to Noorkhan Haidari, a member of the Afghan civil-political youth organization Afghanistan 1400.There have been reports of fighting breaking out over aid handouts.“We are leaving the area now and crowds are dispersing. Fights broke out over aid and bullets started flying,” one aid worker, who asked not to be named, told IRIN.“Both yesterday and today fighting broke out…

Moderate eruptions beyond Sun's western limb, more in the offing

Departing region 2051 produced 2 M-class and several C-class solar flares in last 24 hours. Newly numbered Region 2055 showed minor penumbral development in its trailer portion and should be on the watch. At 22:09 UTC on May 6 Region 2051 erupted with M1.0 solar flare but, due to its position beyond western limb, the CME it generated is not Earth directed. At 16:29 UTC today another M-class solar flare peaking as M1.2 was observed from the same region. Again, due to its position, CME is not Earth directed.Nominal solar wind conditions are expected today. An increase in solar wind speed is expected during May 8 – 9 with the arrival of a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS).Geomagnetic field was quiet today and it is expected to remain like …

Fukushima Worker Files Suit For Exposure

A contract worker at Fukushima Daiichi during the height of the disaster has filed suit for his exposure. The individual was one of a small team of contract workers instructed to go into the flooded turbine building basement of unit 3 to connect a temporary power cable. The workers were not informed of the high levels of radiation in the basement and in the water. Two of the workers received beta burns after contaminated water leaked into their boots and required hospitalization.

Steve Crothers on failures of Big Bang cosmology

Scientists using the BICEP2 telescope recently pronounced that they had discovered direct evidence of Einstein gravitational waves and cosmic inflation. The team describes having detected polarizations in the so-called Cosmic Microwave Background, which is described as the afterglow of the theoretical Big Bang explosion.Science media declared the discovery a victory for Big Bang cosmology. However, omitted from the science press releases are countless foundational problems for the Big Bang theory. Stephen Crothers weighs in on the topic.Video courtesy of Thunderbolts Project…
